INVITATION: REVIEW OF SOKOTO STATE YOUTH AGENDA

One of our activities in the EU British Council ACT grant is to sensitize community-based organisations on Sickle Cell Disorder and Genotype Testing through capacity building.

We built capacity of 100 male and 100 females in Tambuwal local government area of Sokoto State. We appreciate the support of the local government chairman, traditional leaders, religious leaders, the police and the civil defence.

INDUCTION AND ORIENTATION FOR NEW GRANTEES

We participated in the induction ceremony and orientation program for new grantees of the EU ACT program. The event took place in Abuja recently. The training has exposed us to global best practices in terms of CSOs grant management.

Every year, we interact with our new volunteers in an orientation program. This year we had a productive interaction with our volunteers.

The interaction contained presentation on what our organisation does, our aims and objectives and our successes, by Dr Auwal Ahmed Musa, our Executive Director.

The program also featured a presentation about Volunteerism by Mallam Rabiu Bello Ghandi of Save the Child Initiative.

EU-BRITISH COUNCIL ACT PROGRAM FOR CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS IN SOKOTO

We are among  Civil Society Organisations chosen for coaching by EU-BRITISH COUNCIL’s Agents for Citizen-Driven Transformation(ACT). The program involve series of coaching both online and offline. It is aimed at improving the capacity of CSOs to be able to strengthen internal controls and to be able to serve their communities better. So far, we have gained a lot through the coaching. #Clothes4Almajiri 

 

ALMAJIRI SCHOOL NEEDS ASSESSMENT

In compliance with our 2021 work plan, we have embarked on needs assessment for the almajiri school we adopted for our monthly support of clothes, soaps, sandals, medical check up etc.

The team also used the opportunity of the needs assessment to distribute soaps and detergents to the children.

Our team will also visit the remaining almajiri schools in the following local government areas: Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Wamakko, Kware and Dange/Shuni.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF MEETING OF MEMBERS OF #SokotoFaceMasks CAMPAIGN

BEING A COMMUNIQUE PRESENTED AT THE END OF AN ONLINE MEETING OF MEMBERS AND STAKEHOLDERS IN SOKOTO STATE

INTRODUCTION

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted upon the world in several ways. Here in Sokoto State as at today, 10 people have already been infected and tested positive. In view of the above, youths and other Civil Society Organisations formed the #SokotoFacemasks Campaign.

Objectives of the Campaign.

  1. To mobilise youths and civil Society organisations with the view of massive awareness creation on the use of facemasks in Sokoto State via the use of social media, radio and TV stations
  2. To encourage the production of face masks and its distribution to communities in the State.
  3. To strategically engaged various groups with the view of ensuring the implementation of hand washing, social distancing and other preventive measures.
  4. To give accurate information, allay anxiety and clear all misinformations and misconceptions
  5. To support all measures taken so far by Sokoto State government under the leadership of his excellency , Rt Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal .

The stakeholders meeting which took place online, discussed ways and strategies through which the campaign will achieve its objectives and support efforts of the government.

The following are suggestions on ways to achieve success as presented by stakeholders for each of the objectives:

  1. To mobilise youths and civil Society organisations with the view of massive awareness creation on the use of facemasks in Sokoto State via the use of social media, radio and TV stations

– Radio

– Television

– Social media flyers

– Social media influencers to post and to tag and be tagged

– To use or sickle cell ambassadors and other existing structures

– Members should write about #SokotoFaceMasks every day and make it WhatsApp status update

– Use of hand bills and posters

  1. To encourage the production of face masks and its distribution to communities in the State.

– to have support from government/ ministry of health

– support from donor agencies

– request donations from masses

– members to contribute individually from their pockets

– to request donations from pharmaceutical companies

– communities should improvise using handkerchiefs and rubber bands

– mobilise tailors to produce facemasks using locally sourced materials

– to produce advert/promotions e.g. 2 minutes

  1. To strategically engaged various groups with the view of ensuring the implementation of hand washing, social distancing and other preventive measures.

– to meet leaders of various associations e.g. NURTW, KABU KABU, MARKET LEADERS, MECHANICS, KEKENAPEP, BARBERS, HAIR DRESSERS, HANDSET ASSOCIATIONS etc.

– to send out our organization account numbers

  1. To give accurate information, allay anxiety and clear all misinformations and misconceptions

– Use strategies in 1, 2 and 3 above

– some have misinformation: not real; not all confirmed cases are in severe clinical conditions; coronavirus not a death sentence; conspiracy theories to kill muslims

  1. To support all measures taken so far by Sokoto State government under the leadership of his excellency , Rt Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal .

– Government to improve on palliatives/food

– Government to intensify media campaigns

– Provision of more testing centres

– T-shirts/Face caps for the campaign

– Provision of transportation for campaigns and logistics

-Borders should be fully closed

STRATEGY:

– To mobilise and engage 23,000 volunteers within Sokoto State. 1,000 volunteers from each LGA.

– To train them on how to achieve above objectives using online media

– To ensure each ward in the State has representatives

– To assist in contact tracing

– To report cases of returnees and suspected cases.

We developed a youth agenda for Sokoto State. It was developed in collaboration with various youth organisations and stakeholders. It was a 2-Day activity that received good media coverage. The Agenda is to serve as an advocacy tool to all stakeholders. The agenda  is also to serve as a guide that highlights issues affecting youths and young people in Sokoto State
